A PIR sensor detects motion by sensing infrared radiation emitted by humans or animals. It is widely used in security systems, automatic lighting, and smart home applications. The sensor consists of a pyroelectric sensor and a Fresnel lens to enhance detection range. It detects motion within a 5 to 7-meter range and provides a digital output when movement is detected. PIR sensors consume very little power, making them suitable for battery-operated devices. The detection angle is usually around 120 degrees, allowing for wide coverage. It is commonly integrated into burglar alarms, automatic doors, and lighting control systems. The module is easy to interface with microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. It enhances security by triggering alarms or recording movements when unauthorized activity is detected.
